Uganda

Uganda is a diverse country in East Africa, where the human rights situation has significantly deteriorated in recent years. Although the country has a strong tradition of civic engagement, the state of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and minority rights has narrowed. Sexual and gender minorities have faced particular persecution and discrimination. Long-term efforts are still needed to reduce discrimination and inequality.

KIOS in Uganda

KIOS supports civil society organisations in the country that promote, in particular, children’s rights, the status of women, minority rights, and the handling of human rights violations related to land rights. In addition, KIOS supports the capacity building of small organisations in human rights work and security issues. The support is part of a broader multi-year programme by KIOS aimed at strengthening human rights and civil society in Uganda.

KIOS grantees in Uganda:

• Defend local communities’ rights related to land use, corporate responsibility, and large-scale development projects.
• Aim to ensure that economic development and investments are carried out in cooperation with local communities and with respect for their rights.
• Support minorities who face persecution, discrimination, and violence.
• Strengthen the safety and operational capacity of organisations in a context where authorities restrict the work of civil society and use violence against human rights defenders.

Impacts of the human rights work:

• The operating environment for civil society has been strengthened under difficult circumstances.
• Human rights violations, such as issues related to land rights and arbitrary arrests by authorities, have been brought up.
• The rights of women and children have been supported, and local communities’ awareness of their own rights has increased.
